Hello again !

I have an important announcement to make. Today we officially launched a new Mideast Youth project which is a french version of the work done here.

Do you want to see that? Take a look at Dis-moi (which means “Tell me”).

Souad from Morocco and myself are co-editors on the site.

As a beginning, I published a message to introduce the project and ask people to join us. So if you are familiar with the french language and want to contribute, you can email me at: nadia@dis-moi.org

You can also help us find contributors. If you know people who would be interested, tell them about it.

Article: Fewer young Israelis are learning Arabic
Originaly Posted On: 2007-04-05 07:38:28

As the number of Arabic-speaking Jews in Israel dwindles, interest in the language among the younger generation has waned to the point that some university Arabic departments are contemplating closing down. Scott Wilson in The Washington Post has the story (via Tom Gross):

“Rosh Haayin, a town of 30,000 on Israel’s coastal plain, highlights the demographic challenge facing military recruiters as the flow of Jews from Arabic-speaking countries dries up and the first new immigrant generation dies off.

“Jews from Yemen, raised speaking Arabic, once dominated Rosh Haayin. But they now account for roughly 10 percent of the population, composed mostly of middle-class Jews with European and Russian backgrounds who have little interest in Arabic. “There are very few native Arabic speakers left in the Jewish population,” said Carmit Bar-On, who teaches the language at the high school here. “There is a problem teaching Arabic because there is a problem between Arabs and Jews.”

“After military service, fewer and fewer Israelis are studying the language in university, threatening the future of some Arabic departments.

“At 73, (Sasson) Somekh, the retired professor, is the dean of Arabic studies in Israel. He arrived a native Arabic speaker from Baghdad in 1951 after graduating from high school there. His Arabic classes swelled following the 1973 Middle East war, then dipped when the first Palestinian uprising began in 1987, he said. Since the Oslo accords, enrollment has fallen more than 30 percent, even though, he said, “the threat to Israel is higher than ever.”

“Reflecting the mood in Israel, he lamented, “A friend of mine tells me we are now a high-tech economy that the Arabs have nothing to do with, so now we can turn our eyes to the West.”

“Three years ago, after Somekh had stopped teaching full time, the university president told him that he was considering closing the department. “I told him the whole world will say the largest university in Israel just closed its Arabic department,” Somekh said. “That scared him. But there is still this feeling of needing to get away from them as far as possible. This is the attitude shown toward Arabs and toward Arabic.”

Article: Egyptian Paper Highlights Western Coverage of Baha’is
Originaly Posted On: 2007-04-03 06:06:00

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm in its April 2 edition reported on two significant recent releases in the western media regarding the status of the Baha’is in Egypt and Iran. The article, written by Muhammad Abd-El-Khaleq Mussahel, is entitled Documentary American Film regarding “Suffering of Baha’is” in Egypt and Iran.

The first reference was in regards to a recent video production. The writer indicated that the film was “produced by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States.” It described the video as “a new documentary film about the situation of the Baha’is in Egypt and Iran, which was widely publicised on Baha’i Internet sites and blogs.” [examples: here and here]

The paper proceeded to report that “the film which lasts 17 minutes and 19 seconds explains the manifestations of suffering experienced by Baha’is in Egypt and Iran.” It also pointed to the film’s content regarding the ID card crisis affecting the Baha’is of Egypt, and the efforts of the Office of External Affairs in defending human rights of the Baha’is.

The second part of the article went on to briefly describe the content of the recent article published in the Toronto Star on 31 March 2007 and posted here as well.

Sami Ben Gharbia writes a great report on Global Voices Online in favor of our work for Kareem, answering to all the conspiracy theorists that I have also addressed in my response, “Why Kareem, what about the others?”

Take a few tips on how to lead a successful campaign.

Article: Neturei Karta Shul in Monsey Set Ablaze
Originaly Posted On: 2007-04-02 12:38:50

The AP reports,

Authorities are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed the synagogue of an anti-Zionist Jewish group that had been heavily criticized for attending a conference in Iran last year where participants debated the Holocaust.

No one was injured in Sunday night’s fire. A senior Neturei Karta rabbi and his family, who lived on the top floor of the three-story structure, were not home.

“It may in the future be found to be accidental, but at this time we’re treating it as a suspicious fire and we’re investigating it as such,” said Sgt. Daniel Hyman of the Ramapo Police Department, which serves the suburban community of Monsey, about 35 miles north of New York City.

This is a disgraceful way to enter the chag. Mazal tov to everyone who jumped on the “bash NK” bandwagon, and in doing so, enabled this atrocity.

Jews burning shuls to the ground. WTF is the world coming to?

Last week, many media outlets and bloggers claimed the murder of two Iraqi nuns in the city of Kirkuk. The media got it wrong in regard to this story. The two murdered Iraqi Christians were laywomen and NOT nuns. Zenit News Agency reports:

BAGHDAD, Iraq, MARCH 30, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The murder of two elderly women of the Catholic Chaldean community in Kirkuk has heightened fears of the spread of.. [Read More]
